About the Workshop

This week explores Kieran’s expressive painting methods by focusing on three different aspects of

Methods. How to translate watercolour and acrylic landscape studies into more developed paintings including moving from water-based medium into oils.

Techniques. Learn to paint with textural layers. Kieran will encourage you to use unconventional ways of applying the paint including the use of tooth brushes, rags, combs and sponges. Kieran will demonstrate using transfer printing of paint and defining linear details by scoring into the work with a palette knife.

Interpretation. Exploring methods of abstraction referring to artists such as The Fauves, Emile Nol- de, Norman Ackroyd, David Tress as well as Kieran’s own work. Working mainly outdoors, there will also be sessions in the studio working from studies and photos.

About Kieran

Kieran Stiles trained at Falmouth School of Art. He exhibits regularly in London and elsewhere, most recently at the prestigious Lemon Street Gallery in Truro. His exuberant and evocative abstractions of rugged coastland, are expressions of his imagination and sense of place. The paintings are a superimposed series of expressive marks and colours which represent the sense of a vital and continually changing landscape. Kieran also owns a gallery ‘Kieran Stiles Art Studios’, and teaches painting, printmaking and drawing in Oxford. Kieran is represented by Browse & Darby, Cork Street, London.
